Book Description
Blown film production is one of the most demanding processes in plastics processing and polyethylene film manufacturing. Bubble stability, film thickness control, surface quality, repeatability of processing parameters, and reduction of production losses depend on many process factors that interact with each other under real industrial conditions.
In industrial practice, quality problems rarely have a single obvious cause. They usually result from a combination of factors related to cooling conditions, film stretching, material orientation, raw material properties, and extrusion line settings. Understanding these relationships is essential for maintaining process stability and achieving consistent product quality.
This book was created to organize knowledge about blown film extrusion technology and to show how production problems can be analyzed in a logical way. The publication is based on real industrial experience and on the analysis of numerous technological situations encountered on blown film production lines.
After the first edition was very well received and eventually sold out, a second expanded edition of the book was prepared. This new edition includes additional explanations and examples related to real production problems observed in industrial film manufacturing.
Scope of the Book
Among others, the book discusses:
• the blown film extrusion process explained step by step
• bubble stability and the factors influencing its behavior
• the importance of cooling and freeze-line position for film quality
• properties of raw materials used in film production such as LDPE, LLDPE, MDPE and HDPE
• PE film coloring and masterbatch selection
• causes of streaking and color non-uniformity
• practical troubleshooting of production problems such as wrinkling, folding and the “orange peel” effect
• haul-off systems, winding and process stability
• quality control in film production
• methods for process optimization and reduction of production losses
Each topic is analyzed from the perspective of real production conditions — starting from observable symptoms, through possible causes, and finally corrective actions that can be applied in industrial practice.
Who This Book Is For
This publication was prepared primarily for:
• blown film extrusion line operators
• process technologists and engineers
• production managers and quality specialists
• professionals starting their careers in plastics processing
• students of technical disciplines related to polymer processing
The book can be used both in everyday industrial practice and as training material in manufacturing companies.
The Book as a Complement to Training
The publication is a standalone technical reference while also complementing training programs offered within Rolbatch Academy.
Training materials include:
• video recordings from production processes
• photographs from real industrial production lines
• extended descriptions of technological processes
• examples of practical solutions to production problems
Combining the book with training materials helps professionals better understand the technological process and organize the knowledge gained during practical work in production environments.

The “Great Book of Plastics” Series
This book belongs to the “Great Book of Plastics” series, created for professionals working in the plastics processing industry.
Publications in this series are written in a clear and practical language that helps readers understand complex technological topics without the need to study highly academic publications. The goal of the series is to present technological knowledge in an organized and understandable way so that it can be used by production line operators, technologists, and people entering the plastics industry.
Unlike some of the author’s other publications, which are written in a more academic style, books in the “Great Book of Plastics” series focus primarily on practical production issues and on solving problems encountered in real industrial environments.
Example Topics Covered in the Book
• introduction to blown film extrusion technology
• raw materials used in film production
• properties and applications of LDPE, LLDPE, MDPE and HDPE
• bubble stability and process parameter control
• cooling systems and freeze-line position
• film thickness control and process stability
• PE film coloring and masterbatch selection
• common film defects and their causes
